The Town of Oakville site has images of every heritage property in the Town, or at least most of them. The challenge is to find them!

The purpose of this page is to direct you to that site and provide basic directions on how to find and view those images. Details are limited in each case to an undated image of the heritage property, its address, and date of construction of the building.

Please acquaint yourself with that site's TERMS OF USE by clicking here . Read what you are and are not permitted to do with their content, then close that window to return here for further directions.

Clicking on the "CLICK HERE TO BEGIN" link (1) below will take you to a convenient starting point on the Town of Oakville site for viewing their heritage property material. Keep this TCRA window available until you become familiar with navigating their site. After clicking on the link you'll see, in a new window, that part of Oakville containing the three heritage conservation districts (highlighted). If you chose the medium or large size map on a previous visit, you'll see a more detailed street-level view.

A high-speed Internet connection is recommended, and to follow the instructions below you'll need to be comfortable working with multiple windows so you can read the instructions in this window and navigate in a second window containing the Town of Oakville site. Sorry - but it's the best we can do!

1. CLICK HERE TO BEGIN.

2. On the Town of Oakville site, click on the arrow symbol beside "Map Contents" (upper left hand menu) to expand the menu, and click the various menu items to end up with selections as shown below (be sure to at least check "Heritage Properties" and un-check "Heritage Districts"). Click "apply" at the bottom of the menu. The small coloured triangles on the map which are now visible reprepresent the heritage properties you are about to investigate.

3a. Now zoom in by either clicking on "+" or another zone on the zoom tool at the lower left of the window

- O R -

3b. by selecting the + magnifying glass tool on the upper right and clicking once or twice on the area of the map on which you wish to zoom in.

4. Once you're at a comfortable zoom level, click on the "I" for "Info" icon  in the Town's right-hand toolbar (3rd icon below the + magnifying glass).

5. Then click on whichever heritage property you'd like more info on. A small window will pop up. Make sure to select "Heritage Properties" from the small drop-down menu at the top of that window.

You'll now see some basic information about the property, including its address and the year in which it was built.

About 8 rows down in the small window , just above a solid dark grey line, you'll see the word "Image". Clicking on it will produce an undated photo or other image of the property.

Hopefully this will get you acquainted with the Town of Oakville's GIS facility. It's a wonderful resource which you'll appreciate even more as you "play" with it.

But once you get over the novelty, don't forget to return to TCRA for what's REALLY important in your own backyard!

It's very likely that links and other things will change on the Town's site rendering this page less relevant. If you encounter difficulties trying to follow these hopefully helpful hints, please let us know.
