A health facility on the former Hospital Lands – status as it is known to TCRA 17.08.2017
Since the closing of the legacy Hospital was announced, the SE Oakville Residents Associations have been concerned that the existing facilities be at least partially replaced with some form of local health facilities. First approaches were made to Town and Provincial representatives some 6 years ago ca 2011.
The province encouraged a small ad hoc group led by Carol and Grant Gooding to research and report to the Province`s LHIN ( Local Health Integration Network ) on the needs for a local facility. The new hospital is about a half hour drive away and is at least one to one and half hours by public transit. Many of our residents are elderly, and there is no equivalent to the Speers Road facility( run by a group of Doctors), which has extended hours and acts as a triage facility to ensure that only those people that need hospital attention go there. ( which of course assists the hospital in controlling both demand for services and costs ).
The Goodings’ report was completed with the significant support of the SE Oakville RAs through the community survey which was undertaken as part of their submission, and submitted to the Mississauga -Halton LHIN.
Both before this survey and after it TCRA among others ( Councillors, Town officials and Mayor) have met on several occasions with LHIN representatives. Throughout this process the LHIN has been encouraging and interested in participating in some kind of a facility. TCRA, JCRA have also received presentations from Kevin Flynn who indicated strong support including financial support.
Plans have now been finalised for the repurposing use of the former hospital lands and unfortunately there is no plan to offer any kind of triage or medical facilities. This outcome is disappointing to say the least, since at one stage we were pretty sure we would get necessary support.
The Provincial mandate for regional LHINs is being reviewed and rewritten.
The best hope at this point in time would appear to be interest from a group of Doctors who would set up and run a facility similar to Speers Road, located possibly on Cornwall or similar.
